How to Know if You’re Qualified to Work from Home for a Certain Company

There are a lot of different companies you can work for from home, and many of them have been covered here on Work at Home Adventures as well as other work from home blogs.   They all have different requirements with regard to the geographical areas they hire in, the type of equipment needed, as well as the skills you need to work for the specific company.   Obviously if you don’t live in the geographical area the company hires in,  or if you don’t have the equipment you need to work for the company, you won’t be able to work for the company. However, if you don’t have the skills, there are ways to obtain the skills you need to work for different companies. This post will discuss how to know if you’re qualified to work for a certain company, as well as websites you can use to get the skills or knowledge you need if you don’t have it already.

 

1. Look at the skill requirements as well as the experience requirements for the job you’re considering applying for.   For example, one job that Miranda recently posted in the “Hiring Now” section says that you need two years or more of experience in the customer service field, including live chat moderation.  Since I don’t have experience in live chat moderation, I probably wouldn’t want to apply for this position.
2. Look at the requirements for the type of equipment you need.   The job I mentioned previously only  mentions that you  need a personal computer and Internet connectivity to apply for the job – no information is given on what kind operating system it needs to have, or if you need any other software, such as Microsoft Word.  Therefore, most people who have the previously-mentioned experience could probably apply for this job.    I should mention however, that some companies will not be very specific upfront about the type of equipment needed – some wait until you email them or submit an application to give more specifics.    In addition, some companies require equipment other than a computer, depending on the position you’re applying for.  For example, if you’re doing any kind of telephone work, you may be expected to have a dedicated landline telephone, although some companies are now making and receiving calls with USB headsets, which eliminates the need for a landline.

So what if you have the equipment but don’t have all the skills for the job you want?  Where can you get the skills?  You can always check out your library or local community college for courses in the skills you need, but if you just need training in how to use a program such as Microsoft Word or Excel, there are some great websites that you can go to that offer free training.

• E-Learning Center – This site offers free courses in HTML, A+, MCSE, Excel, Office as well as others.  Each course is 2-6 hours long.
• Free Skills – This site offers some free tutorials in different programming languages, as well as software programs such as Word, Excel and Access.
• Online Education Database – If you have the computer knowledge, but need to brush up on some of the other skills you need, Online Education Database offers courses in areas such as Natural Science, Math, Engineering and Computer Science, Language, Art and Design, Health, Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Law and Politics, Social Science, History, Theology, Business and Finance, and Family and Education.

 

Working from home is great, but just as with any job, there are certain requirements that you need to meet. I hope this post has given you some idea of how to know if you’re qualified to work from  home for a certain company,  and where to get the knowledge and skills you need if you don’t meet the qualifications for the job you want.
